After participating in the RepRap project for almost two years and travelling with my Prusa Mendel, I found the need for a more portable, less fragile printer. I began by designing the fully printable Tantillus seen below.

Original printed Tantillus Immediately after pictures of the original Tantillus were released to the public, I was inundated with requests for finished parts. Realizing there was a demand for a small portable printer and that the demand could not be kept up with through the printing of the entire case, I proceeded to design a simpler version using laser cut panels and printed connectors. The result is what you will find documented here.

Both printers use the same electronics and share all the same printed parts for the Extruder, X, Y and Z axis. So once you have assembled one version you will be able to build the other with ease. This also means if you have a Laser cut version and a Printed version you can swap parts without compatibility issues.

GPL v3 The source is divided up into four main Blend files, Tantillus_V0.1.1 which contains the printed case, Tantillus_extruder, Tantillus_gears and Tantillus_V0.3.4 which contains the laser cut case and the axis parts for both the Printed and Laser cut versions. There are a few extra blend files containing the accessories. The Blend files are also 95% parametric allowing you to make changes with ease. The printable LM8uu linear bearings are by Triffid Hunter.


GnuTux Tantillus was developed entirely using Opensource software and tools. The machine itself was modelled using Blender which is a powerful mesh modelling and animation program. The prototypes were all produced on Opensource 3D printers (Prusa, Thing-o-matic, Tantillus, Citadel Mendel) using Opensource software to slice and run the machines. The website and models were designed on computers running Opensource operating systems (Mint 12, Ubuntu) with Opensource software. The SVG files were produced from STL files using Openscad, the programmer's solid modelling program. All the 2D image manipulation was performed with GIMP.


GPL v3 In the true spirit of the RepRap project I am releasing the files under the GPL license, giving everyone the same rights to modify, improve and sell them as they see fit.
